Mark Sanford is the King of TMI

South Carolina Governor,Mark Sanford, keeps trying to explain his extra marital rumpy bumpy and to let us all know that he really isn't a bad guy even though he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar(so to speak) The more he explains the worse it gets.

Last week's press conference where he admitted he was in Argentina with his honey and not hiking the Appalachian Trail was bad enough. Explanations of the "sparking thing"that developed between him and a " dear friend" along with lots of " I've been a bad boy, don't know what got into me, and I won't do it again" yah da yah da yah da. made me cringe. I swear, all adulterous husbands read from the same script, but most of them don't hold press conferences and tell it to the world. It was definitely TMI( too much information) and I know I wasn't the only one cringing. I bet his wife, Jenny, was just a tad embarrassed at having the family laundry washed quite so publicly.

But yesterday, Mark went and made it worse. Like a knight of old, coming to the rescue of the tarnished reputation of his ladylove Sanford told reporters

"This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story. A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day"

Great. I bet his wife, Jenny, was happy to hear that. Another brilliant TMI moment in which not only Mark Sanford's marriage, but also his political future hit the skids. What is he thinking? I guess I know. He's not thinking. He's feeling, And what he is feeling is life, love, and youth passing him by. He is having a classic mid-life crisis. Poor baby. He is madly, hopelessly, idealistically, crazily in love.

It's a guy thing and I don't pretend to understand it. But I do know, that in the end he is apt to lose his wife and possibly his children and his career as well. We all know what hell hath no fury like. I suspect that the lady in Argentina is apt to rethink things too and he won't end up with her either.

So set em up Joe and play another chorus of " Don't Cry for Me Argentina." But please please please, don't let soon-to-be-ex- Governor Sanford hold another press conference. I've had enough and I hope he has too.

Only in America... Thanks to those morally anal Puritans who set the tone for this country 300+, we're the only civilized country that gives a flying banana where a married man dips his wick **as long as he's discreet**.

Had the soon-to-be ex-Guv and ex-Husband Sanford been *thinking*, this could've been handled much differently. But then I live in a state where a sitting governor divorced a wife in his first term to marry his mistress, divorced that wife in the second term to marry yet another mistress, and the press coverage in both cases wouldn't fill a whole column above the fold. The press "conference" in each case was merely an announcement that "Governor and Mrs Governor will divorce". End of statement. Things happen, life goes on.

Oops...That should read 300+ years ago!

Good points and interesting thoughts. Maybe it's cause he's like a celebrity type of mentality.

Guess what-- In South Carolina adultery is a crime.... there is still a law on the books although the last time it was enforced was 1911-- but the Guv. could get up to a year in jail and a fine of $500.In the old days the law probably didn't stop the sin, just stopped people talking about it:-)

In Canada, this might have been reported but never would have turned into the type of story that it has now become. We're just not that interested in public figures' sex lives.

Ahhh Canada is a kinder, gentler and ultimately saner world, I think:-)

So glad you wrote about this. I was thinking the same thing- TMI! I feel for his wife. She'll wise up in a couple of months. He also admitted to crossing the line with other women in the past, I'm glad we didn't get the details of "why" it wasn't so bad (Clinton style I suppose). Experts are giving their marriage a 30% chance of survival, the chances of his career surviving...?

I live in New York - need I saw more? Spitzer? The Senate?

I have come to believe that questionable men can be capable legislators (Kennedy, FDR) but this is another story.

Spitzer's behavior was illegal - prostitution is against the law in NY and crossing state lines for those purposes is a federal offense.

Sanford was not only a lovesick boob with a penchant for blabbering, but he disappeared. He just took off, told no one where he was and soothed his lovelorn soul. And if there'd been an emergency in his state?
Sorry - we haven't heard from the guv. That is his crime, in my opinion. Dereliction of duty.

As for his wife, I'm loving her. She's not standing by her man and she's not hiding the fact that she's ticked off. That's not newsworthy, in my opinion, but it sure is refreshing after these long suffering, martyred political wives.

Hi Amy-- I think Jenny the wife has already wised up and I betcha she is outa there very soon. His marriage is over, and if he doesn't shut up, ditto his career:-) It is very uncomfortable to watch it all unfold on TV-- kinda like going out to dinner with friends who proceed to have a huge fight in the restaurant LOL.

And Susan-- I totally agree that taking off and not telling anyone where he was changes the game. BTW adultery is illegal in South Carolina, which I find rather quaint:-) In any case the guy is totally ruined in every possible way now. I wish he would just stop talking. I love his wife too. She is handling it all with grace and style IMHO.

I think it is relevant, in Sanford's case, because he's been so openly moralistic and condemnatory of other politicians who've played away from home.

yup another bible belting hypocrite bites the dust:-)

don't sit on the fence, tell us what you really think.....

The man has no merit. His hypocritical condemnation of others leaves him nowhere to go, he is yesterdays parrot.
