In the wake of the very sad events of yesterday , this cartoon just begged to be passed on. Sometimes, even in sad situations one needs to smile. Wisconsin and Libya are, of course, not equal in scale. Wisconsin has a nutty Governor who may soon be gone if the people of Wisconsin have their way. Libya on the other hand, is under the heel of a mad dictator who has been in power for forty years of bloody, despotic rule and now seems bent on murdering the entire population of the country.. It may seem like an insult to the brave people of Libya to compare the two situations, but there are some similarities.
Governments govern only with the consent of the governed . In both Wisconsin and Libya, that consent is in the process of being withdrawn, albeit in vastly different ways. The people of Wisconsin are picking up placards. The people of Libya are laying down their lives. Wisconsin is calling a general strike. Libya is living through a bloody popular revolution. The difference is one of scale. In both cases the people are making their voices heard and in the end, they cannot be denied. They will have their way.
Power to the people, in Libya, Wisconsin, and all over the world. We are not separate. We are one and what happens in Wisconsin or Libya has far reaching consequences for all of us who call planet Earth home.

I was wondering as I watched the news last night how, here in Michigan, the governor could invest enough authority in an 'emergency city financial manager' to make people put up with an outsider firing the whole city government. Without the consent of the governed, how can that even work?
It's inspiring to see working people stand up to this.
We are lucky to live in a country where people can protest without fear of being mowed down by government troops-- that said the motives of despots are always the same and Walker qualifies IMHO
Great post. The saddest part in all this in my opinion is that so many of Americans do not care at all about Wisconsin or Libya. We are controlled by money. It is a softer control, but somehow more effective.
Right now, Americans can still "protest without fear of being mowed down by government troops", but if the Repugs, Right Wing Nuts and Tea Partiers have their way, that right will also go the way of 8-track tapes. How sad that they hate Democrats and non-Repubs so much that they're willing to destroy - no, bent on destroying - democracy in America to eliminate those who do not think or believe as they do. Hitler would be proud.

In light of TODAY's events - the bombing of Libya by "allied" forces, meaning the U.S. and whoever else follows our lead - I have to add that it'd be nice if the powers that be in OUR nation's capitol would be as concerned with the threats to freedom and democracy in OUR country and LESS concerned with freedom and democracy in countries on the other side of the Pond. Putting away the soapbox now....
